As we were building our house i was looking on the internet for ideas on how to decorate it. I came across a shoe mat where they used these tiny rocks. Where my husband comes home with dirty and muddy shoes on a regular basis i wanted to make something like that but it a little more durable by using bigger rocks. Wanna see how i made this?
When i saw the mat with the small rocks they used a bought plastic shoe mat and i thought i have tons of left over wood from our house so I grabbed a scrap piece of wood that i saved and for the rest of the supplies i bought 5 bags of rocks at the dollar store and some silicone from the hardware store.
I painted and then arranged the rocks on the plywood.
Then i started gluing on the rocks. I used a clear silicone sealant but you can use anything you have around the house. I thought about using my glue gun but it has disappeared during the move.
I started gluing each rock then i went the easy way out and put glue all over the board. Both ways worked good and where i used the silicone sealant it stayed soft and i was able to move the rocks around if i didnt like they way it looked. The more random the rocks the better it looks.
I had some left over silicone so i filled in some of the spaces on the one corner to see which way my husband would like better. If he likes it i will do the rest if not i will just pull it off and add new rocks.
I love it! I love it even more that i used a free piece of plywood, $5.00 worth of river rocks and a $5.00 silicone tube and was able to make a $10.00 mat that is cute, durable and a perfect addition to my bare house. So what do you think of my rock shoe mat?

What a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove your mat! Did you put anything on the bottom of the plywood to protect the floor?
ReplyDeleteI live with a plumber who always had dirty boots. I'm tired of paying $20-$30 for rugs at Lowes/Walmart that don't last or collect dirt. This is wonderful!
I've been thinking of doing this underneath our wood burning stove...Right now there is just a fire backer- board, covered in tin ,painted to simulate red brick. I have thought of using the bags of Dollar Tree rocks... but wasn't sure how to fasten them to the board. (which I'm going to paint black also!)
ReplyDeleteI think this silicone idea is FANTASTIC--- NOW if I can just get it done before -- late fall sometime????
I'm am super stoked about you posting this idea.
PS... I personally like the silicone filled in around the rocks. For my purpose it will be great.
If I do this -- I'm gonna post it and send you a link...
